Magill Family Papers

Overview Edward H. (Edward Hicks) Magill (1825-1907) was a prominent Quaker teacher and was President of Swarthmore College from 1872-1889. He was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the son of Jonathan P. and Mary Magill of Solebury Monthly Meeting of Friends. In 1852 he married Sarah Warner Beans, and they had six daughters. Overview

James A. Michener (1907-1997, Swarthmore College class of 1929) was a bestselling American author of more than four dozen books. His first, Tales of the South Pacific and published when he was 40, won the Pulitzer Prize. The bulk of this collection is clippings about James A. Michener and foreign stamps collected by him.

Overview In June 1940 at the age of thirty-five, John W. Nason (1905-2001) became the eighth president of Swarthmore College. A strong proponent of the Honors Program, he continued the mission of academic excellence established by Frank Aydelotte while adapting the campus to the pressures of World War. The Swarthmore Outing Club, still active and known as "The Outsiders" as of 2015, plans excursions such as hiking, climbing, and backpacking for students. In 1961, interested students in the Outing Club registered as Swarthmore Grotto #98, a student chapter of the National Speleological Society. This collection of Swarthmore Outing Club records, circa 1961-1968, consists of files on caves explored by the club and issues of the club's biannual newsletter.

Overview Samuel Copeland Palmer (1874-1961) was Professor of Botany at Swarthmore College, Pa., from 1909 to 1942 and a lifelong member of the Society of Friends.
