Chase, Thomas

The collection is concentrated on the period of 19th to early 20th century and includes the correspondence, diaries, genealogies, wills, deeds, and scrapbooks of the Quaker Chase, Cromwell, and Underhill families.

Correspondence, portraits, photographs, clippings, articles, addresses, lecture notes, diary, and miscellaneous papers related to Thomas Chase (1827-1892), his family, and his years at Haverford as professor and president of the College.

The collection consists of two addresses on education given by Thomas Chase, President of Haverford College from 1875 to 1886.

Letters relating to the emigration of free Blacks to the West African colony of Liberia and establishment of Liberian institutions written to American Quaker reformer, Benjamin Coates (1808-1887) whose work toward the abolition of slavery led to a relationship with many well-known people connected to Liberia, a colony established to offer a new home and a fresh start away from slavery to free Blacks in the mid-19th century.

Letters written to Edward Rhoads, a Quaker physician and Haverford College graduate. Letters writers include Edward Rhoads's parents (Samuel and Anne Gibbons Rhoads), Thomas Chase, Josiah Forster, Anna Harrison, Sophie and John Pease, Elisabeth and Henry Crosfield, William Pepper, M.A. and William Longstreth, James Carey Thomas, the Yarnall family, and others. The letters generally offer friendly regard.
