This collection is comprised of the single volume account book of Israel Howell Birdsall. The volume includes an index, in which individuals are organized alphabetically. Entries record amounts paid or owed, goods purchased, and currency used. Majority of entries include the purchase and sale of: oil, oil meal (used as food for livestock), flax seed, plaster, beans, apples, and butter.

Biographical Note

Israel Howell (1786-1864) was the son of Arthur Howell and Mary Mott Howell. He married Elizabeth Rowland Howell (1789-1866), the daughter of Sarah Parker Rowland, and they had several children: Elizabeth Howell (1834-1876), Sally R. Howell (1829-1850), Joshua R. Howell (b. 1825), and Jacob Howell (1827-1891).

The Howell family were members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) who resided in Howellville, Edgmont Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. They were a financially comfortable, well-educated family.
