This collection is comprised of the single volume diary of John M. Rice, as well as a single folder of related materials, which were tucked inside the original volume. Diary entries describe Rice's voyages with the Navy, including information about the weather and caring for sick sailors. He appears to have been stationed near New Orleans, Louisiana, during the end of the War of 1812, and entries include news of military defeats during the war.
