Everett-Athenaeum records

 Collection
Identifier: HCQ-003-004

Scope and Contents

The materials in this collection include the constitution and by-laws of the newly consolidated Everett-Athenaeum society, which describes the officers and their duties, the election of officers and members, the rules of order, and the process for making amendments to the constitution. Interestingly, this constitution is dated from 1888, although all other sources say that the merge of the Everett and Athenaeum societies occurred in 1889. The Registrar Book of the Everett-Athenaeum includes a note on the consolidation of the Everett and Athenaeum societies, and the official meeting minutes from 1888 to 1890. Additionally, there are two copies of an invitation to a lecture presented by Professor Robert W. Rogers and hosted by the Everett-Athenaeum, its subject being "the story of beginnings in the Old Testament, and in Babylonian literature." Also included is a ticket for a course of 1894, The Everett-Athenaeum Lectures, as presented by Mr. Charles H. Adams.

Historical Note

In 1889, the Everett Society merged with the Haverford Athenaeum to form the Everett-Athenaeum Society in an effort to increase waning student interest and membership. The new joint organization was open to the public, doing away with the previous exclusivity and competition. The loosened rules regarding membership and attendance changed the previously rigorous nature of the societies. The Everett-Athenaeum met for business meetings in Barclay Hall, and held literary meetings in Alumni Hall. Attendance unfortunately did not increase. Meetings seem to have ceased after March 28, 1890.
