Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of the single volume commonplace book of Catherine Haines. The volume includes extracts on the art of writing, poetry, extracts of speeches, extracts on child rearing and education, Indigenous peoples, a memorandum for Susanna James, extracts from William Hunt's illness, and a memorandum of Hannah Shoemaker. It also includes manuscript copies by Catherine of three poems by Phillis Wheatley: “Atheism,” “To Mrs. Ellis on her remarkable Deliverance in the hurrican in North Carolina,” and “To the Honorable Commadore Hood on his Pardoning a Deserter.”

Biographical Note

Catherine Haines (1758-1798) was born in October, 1758, in Frederick County, Virginia. She married John S. Mullen on March 25, 1776, in Burlington, New Jersey. Mullen was not a Quaker, and Haines was disowned for marrying outside of the Society of Friends. The couple had at least one child who survived to adulthood, Isaac Mullen (b. 1777). In 1790, Haines was reinstated by Evesham Monthly Meeting in New Jersey, and she got a certificate of removal to Crooked Creek Monthly Meeting in Virginia. Catherine Haines died on May 25, 1798, in Frederick County, Virginia.

The Catherine Haines commonplace book was donated to Special Collections, Haverford College in 1957 by Mrs. Samuel Emlen.
