Biographical / Historical

Founded in the interest of providing opportunities for "greater fellowship, to encourage the development of deeper spiritual experience, and to facilitate service projects for young Quakers" between the ages of 15 and 35 years, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting's Young Friends Movement actually began as two groups, Hicksite and Orthodox (called the Young Friends Movement and the Young Friends Committee, respectively). Founded in the interest of providing opportunities for "greater fellowship, to encourage the development of deeper spiritual experience, and to facilitate service projects for young Quakers" between the ages of 15 and 35 years, PYM's Young Friends Movement actually began as two groups, Hicksite and Orthodox (called the Young Friends Movement and the Young Friends Committee, respectively). In May 1975, after a long period of evaluation, Young Friends Movement merged with the Religious Education Committee.

Overview

This collection contains the papers of the Young Friends Movement, dating between 1916 and 1997. Included in the collection are materials published by the Young Friends, including their montly newspaper "The Quake," correspondance between members, and the papers of Clarence Pickett, the former secretary of the Young Friends Movement and executive secretary of the American Friends Service Committee, both relating to his time with the Young Friends and his time with the AFSC.
