"Among the Red Indians"

Scope and Content note

This collection is comprised of the single volume manuscript of Henry Stanley Newman, entitled "Among the Red Indians." The manuscript provides a narrative of Newman's travels among the American Indians west of the Mississippi River in 1889. The manuscript was prepared for Mary S. Kimber when she was proposing to write a book on the work that American Friends did with Native Americans, which was published in 1917 and entitled "Friends and the Indians." Newman's manuscript was never published. The manuscript describes the various Indian settlements that Newman and his wife visit on their travels, the Indians they interact with, including the Musckogee, and the landscape.

Biographical note

Henry Newman (1837-1912) was born in Liverpool in 1837, the son of Josiah Newman and Harriet Wood. He was educated at Bootham School in York. After his father started a grocery business in Leominster, Henry began working there in 1858. He married Mary Ann Pumphry in 1863, and they had six children. Newman was an active Quaker throughout his life, and served as the clerk for his Monthly Meeting for over twenty years, and was recorded a minister in 1869. From 1888-1890 he travelled in America visiting all the Orthodox and Hicksite Yearly Meetings. In Leominster, Newman was also very active in education-- he was one of the founders of Leominster Adult School and was leader of the Leominster Men's School for 54 years. He also founded the Leominster Orphan houses. After retiring from business in 1892, Newman became the editor of the Quaker journal, "The Friend," and served as the editor until his death in Leominster in October, 1912.
