Biographical note

The members of the Ogden family represented here include David Aaron (1770-1829), Thomas Ludlow (1773-1844), and Gouverneur (1778-1851). All three attended Columbia University and studied law. The Ogden Land Company was created by the three brothers. They bought land in New York State from Native nations in the nineteenth century and sold them to white Americans. The brothers are also known for their legal counsel on the Holland Land Company, which belonged to European investors who recruited Americans to manage the company due to laws regarding European ownership of U.S. land. “Holland Land Company.” Wikipedia, April 24, 2018.
