Scope and Contents

The Personal Papers were donated by Frank Aydelotte's son, William O. Aydelotte. They reflect the wide range of Aydelotte's interest and activities: academic, cultural, philanthropic, family matters, and governmental advising, in which he acted in a personal capacity and not as an officer of Swarthmore College. These papers span his entire career, while a Rhodes Scholar, a professor of English at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, President of Swarthmore College, and Director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. The first group includes biographical and genealogical papers, including daybooks. The bulk of the collection is correspondence, organized alphabetically. The last group is organized by subject.
