Biographical / Historical

Lucy Durand Sikes was a New York Quaker artist, active in historic preservation and environmentalism. She came to Brooklyn in the 1950s to study at the Pratt Institute and became an important activist in saving brownstones which were threatened by urban renewal. In 1988, she joined Brooklyn Monthly Meeting where she served in many capacities. For decades she supplied Spark, the newsletter of New York Yearly Meeting, and other Quaker publications with her observational drawings of Friends, often drawn during meeting sessions.
