The bulk of the correspondence in this collection is comprised of letters written to Green from Philadelphia Friends in regard to gifts in support of Indian work. Later letters written by Green describe from memory the social life and customs of the Otoe Indians.

The collection has information on the Otoe language, vocabulary, etc., and also correspondence in 1934-1935 with J. Russell Hayes giving an account from memory of life among the Otoes in the 1870s. Some drawings are included in the collection. Correspondents include William Dorsey, Benjamin Hallowell, J. Russell Hayes, Samuel M. Janney, Samuel Jeanes, John Saunders.

Overview

Albert Lamborn Green (1845-1947) was a Quaker Indian Agent for the Otoe Agency in Nebraska during the period of President Grant's "peace policy," 1869-1872. The bulk of the correspondence in this collection is comprised of letters written to Green from Philadelphia Friends in regard to gifts in support of Indian work. Later letters written by Green describe from memory the social life and customs of the Otoe Indians. The collection has information on the Otoe language, vocabulary, etc., and also correspondence in 1934-1935 with J. Russell Hayes giving an account from memory of life among the Otoes in the 1870s. Some drawings are included in the collection. Correspondents include William Dorsey, Thomas Garrigues, Benjamin Hallowell, J. Russell Hayes, Samuel M. Janney, Samuel Jeanes, Joseph Powell, John Saunders, George Smith, and Benjamin Stratton.

Biographical / Historical

Albert Lamborn Green (1845-1947) was a Quaker Indian Agent for the Otoe Agency in Nebraska during the period of President Grant's "peace policy," 1869-1872.

He was the son of Sarah Sharpless and William Lamborn Green of Chester Monthly Meeting, Pennsylvania. In 1869 he was appointed by President Grant as Indian Agent to the Confederated Otoe and Missouri tribes in Nebraska. In 1871, he married Sarah Cadwallader Lightfoot of Horsham Monthly Meeting who was the daughter of Thomas Lightfoot, also an Indian Agent. The family settled in Beatrice, Nebraska. After the death of his first wife, he married a second time, in 1921, to Emma Crothers of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.

The collection was given by Albert L. Green in 1935. Additional papers (photocopies) were given in 1990 by his granddaughter, Mary Bloodgood.

Formerly cited as Green Manuscripts. Catalogued completely before 1950 in Manuscript Card Index (FHL Reading Room). Circa 1985, transferred to Record Group 5. In 1990, photocopies of documents and publications by Albert L. Green and newsclippings about him received from his granddaughter were added to the collection.
