Scope and Contents
The collection contains draft correspondence and writings attributed to Isaac P. Hambleton of Carmel Monthly Meeting, Ohio. He was a strong supporter of abolition. The letters and manuscripts express liberal religious and progressive Quaker views.

Biographical / Historical
The donor attributed these manuscripts by their content and context to Isaac Proctor Hambleton and his family. Isaac P. Hambleteon (1802-1895) was the son of William and Mary Kester Hamblton of Balimore. He removed to Carmel Monthly Meeting, Columbiana Co., Ohio, in 1832 where he married Eleanor Davidson, a non-member, in 1841. In 1854, he moved to Iowa where he kept a farm. His daughter, Lauretta Hambleton, married Asa W. Howard, and they had one son, Fred Howard, who had no children. Isaac P. Hambleton's obituary was published in The United Friend, a publication intended to reach across all branches of the Society of Friends as well as Friends Intelligencer, the Hicksite periodical. He was described as a man of strong pro-abolition convictions, progressive views, and a great reader.

Custodial History
The donor found the manuscripts among Howard family papers, and by their Quaker content, she concluded that they came from the Hambleton branch of her family. Isaac and Eleanor Hambleton had five children, but only their daughter Lauretta married. She married Asa W. Howard, and they had one child, Frederick Hambleton Protor Howard (1876-1945), who was childless.

Separated Materials
Memorial pamphlet concerning Cyrus Beede (1828-1908) of Oskaloosa, Indiana, active in the Indian Agency and active in Iowa Yearly Meeting. One of the speakers at his funeral was Albert F. N. Hambleton. Transferred to PG 7, Biographical reference, for better access.
