Biographical / Historical

Richard Cadbury was born June 8, 1885, the son of Richard Tapper Cadbury (1853-1929) and Helen V. Nathans Cadbury, members of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of the Western District. His father was a well known Quaker author, art critic, and businessman. Richard attended Haverford College and was an avid hiker and enjoyed travel. In 1914 transferred his membership from Haverford Monthly Meeting to Wilmington Monthly Meeting. During WWI, he worked for the Red Cross. In 1921 on his passport application he gave his occupation as social worker, traveling to Great Britain, Netherlands, Switzerland, France, and Poland for relief work. In 1924 he married Olive Clinton McCabe.

He was employed by the New York State Department of Welfare and served as District Supervisor of Old Age Assistance in the 1950s. In 1946, he transferred his membership to Uwchlan Monthly Meeting and was a member of that meeting at the time of his death on May 11, 1966.
