Historical note

The Emergency Peace Federation was organized by George Foster Peabody, Louis P. Lochner, and Lella Secor Florence, and assisted by Emily Greene Balch, William I. Hull, David Starr Jordan, and Fanny Garrison Villard in the first years of World War I. It was a hastily assembled peace coalition that sought to oppose U.S. drift into the war. EPF members promoted the idea of a lasting and durable peace and encouraged President Woodrow Wilson to mediate between warring nations. In July 1917 the Federation merged with the People's Council of America for Democracy and Peace.
