Biographical / Historical

Letters solicited and collected by Mike Sweitzer-Beckman to and from people imprisoned for nonviolent acts of civil disobedience; his goal was to demonstrate that there is a movement of resistance that is alive and well in the United States, and that it was not only a Vietnam War phenomenon. The Letters of Nonviolence Project began in 2002 when Sweitzer-Beckman began collecting letters from people serving prison sentences for committing acts of civil disobedience at the U.S. Army School of the Americas (now called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation). Some of the letters reflect that action; others are from people who committed civil disobedience at other demonstrations, including nuclear test sites.
