Biographical / Historical

North American Seminar on Training and Organizing for Nonviolent Action (NASTONA); formed in 1970 at Pendle Hill study center in Wallingford, Pennsylvania; goal was to provide a forum where people could share nonviolent training and organizing skills, promote nonviolent direct action as a mean of social change, and develop a network of nonviolent trainers who would be available to train groups working for nonviolent social change. NASTONA was sponsored by the A.J. Muste Memorial Institute; Lynne Shivers was one of the organizers; headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. NASTONA appeared to be modeled on and in some way related to the International Seminar(s) on Training for Nonviolent Action, headquartered in Massachusetts, which was also sponsored by the A.J.
