Biographical / Historical
The Pledge of Resistance (POR) began in late 1984 with the circulation by Jim Wallis in Sojourners magazine of a Pledge to resist the threat of U.S. invasion of Nicaragua. Appealing first to Christians, the Pledge broadened its appeal and included resistance to any U.S. military intervention in Central America. In the next three years, thousands of people were involved in acts of nonviolent civil disobedience and protests in all 50 states. Groups which worked closely with the Pledge included the Inter-Religious Task Force for Central America, the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador, the American Friends Service Committee, the San Francisco Bay Area's Emergency Response Network, and Bay Area Pledge of Resistance. National Directors were Stephen Slade, Ken Butigan, and Judy Rohrer.
