YEARLY MEETING: A large autonomous body of Quakers, which meets for several days once a year. In theory, its decisions are binding on the monthly and quarterly meetings within its jurisdiction and on the committees and staff which carry out the work of the yearly meeting. It meets annually to conduct business, formulate the discipline, receive reports and concerns from its constituent meetings, review the state of the Society, and communicate with other yearly meetings and non-Quaker organizations.

Committee on Civil Liberties of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records

Overview A Coordinating Committee on Civil Liberties was appointed by both PYM in 1954. The following year, the reunited Yearly Meeting approved the creation of a regular Committee on Civil Liberties "to activate anew our ancient testimony."

Committee on Racial Concerns of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records

Overview The Committee on Racial Concerns took up the activities and experience of the Committee on Community Involvement when the latter was laid down at the end of 1978. It operated under the Coordinating Committee for Testimonies and Concerns (CC-2) until it was laid down in 1996.

Mississippi Project Financial Records

Overview In response to the 1964 bombing of 44 black churches in Mississippi, Philadelphia and New York Yearly Meetings coordinated a joint effort to rebuild the destroyed churches and to attempt to foster racial reconciliation in the area. The project sent Lawrence and Viola Scott to Jackson, Mississippi as Quaker representatives. By 1966, the group had rebuilt 33 of the 44 churches, and built a community center in rural Canton, Mississippi. This collection is primarily composed of financial records,...
