Biographical / Historical

Deer Creek was established as a monthly meeting by Nottingham Quarterly Meeting in 1760 among Friends in the area who had been "subjected to various Difficulties in attending the [Nottingham] Monthly Meeting, so well as is necessary, on Account of their distances & the frequent dangers of the River." The first meeting was held in 1760. Starting in 1806, the meeting met alternately at Deer Creek and Fawn, and variously at Deer Creek, Fawn, and Broad Creek from 1844 until 1949. During the Separation of 1828, the meeting's Hicksite majority retained control of the meeting house. Orthodox members withdrew and met in members' homes until a separate meeting house was built. A small number of Deer Creek Friends joined with others from Nottingham and Little Britain in 1855 to form a Wilburite Baltimore Yearly Meeting. The Hicksite and Orthodox branches united informally during the 1920s and formally in 1949, as Deer Creek Monthly Meeting (United).
