Biographical / Historical

Hopewell Monthly Meeting was established in 1735 by Chester Quarterly Meeting and was comprised of Opequan and Providence Meetings. During the Separation of 1828, the meeting was divided. A small number of Friends from Hopewell sided with the Orthodox branch and established Hopewell Monthly Meeting (Orthodox) by 1830. Both the Hicksite and Orthodox branches continued to use the meeting house, each meeting using one half of the building. In 1954, Hopewell Monthly Meeting, Orthodox merged with the Hicksite branch, forming Hopewell Monthly Meeting, United. In 1999, Hopewell Monthly Meeting and Winchester Centre Meeting merged to form a new body, Hopewell Centre Monthly Meeting; they meet in the old Hopewell meeting house.

In 1790 all meetings in Northern Virginia, Western Maryland, Nottingham Quarter, and meetings farther west in Pennsylvania were assigned to Baltimore Yearly Meeting.
