Biographical / Historical

In 3mo 1944, Rufus Jones published an article, "Are We Ready," in Friends Intelligencer. In response to his concern for deepening the spiritual life of the Religious Society of Friends, members of both the Race Street and Arch Street Philadelphia Yearly Meetings gathered six months later in the meeting house at 15th and Race Streets. Originally called the Committee to Further the Concern of Rufus M. Jones, the group formed a joint body and met regularly. Rufus Jones participated in the Committee before his death in 1948, and introduced a number of ideas, including having Quaker youth become involved in intervisitation in order to revitalize local meetings. Richmond P. Miller wrote On your marks! Get set! The Committee on the Religious Life of Our Society also published a Study Outline on the Religious Life of a Meeting (1946).
