American Friends Service Committee lantern slides of World War I relief work

Overview English and American Quakers were involved in relief efforts in Europe during and after WWI. These efforts were begun by English Quakers of London Yearly Meeting, and later joined by the American Friends Service Committee. They expanded the scope of their aid from France to also include Russia, Serbia, Poland, Austria, and Germany. The lantern slides in this collection were taken during these relief efforts and, along with lecture notes, sent back home to Friends groups who would use the slides...

Abstract Nancy Babb (1884-1948) was a member of the Society of Friends who served as a field representative for the Red Cross and then as a relief worker in Russia from 1917 to the mid 1920s. On her return to the United States in 1928 Babb lectured about her work in Russia. Overview This collection contains the papers of Philadelphia Quaker Owen Biddle (1737-1799), his son, Clement Biddle (1778-1856), and numerous descendants. Owen Biddle, a scientist and merchant, was a member of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting and helped in the establishment of Westtown School (1799). Wilmer J. and Mildred Binns Young Papers

Overview Wilmer J. Young (1887-1983), a Quaker teacher and peace activist born in Iowa, was involved in post World War I reconstruction in France and Poland. He married Mildred Binns in 1922, and together they worked with AFSC work camps and cooperative farms until he began to teach at Pendle Hill in 1955.
