Rockland County Peace Association Records

Overview The Rockland County Peace Association was a small local peace group begun in 1930 to stimulate popular education and public opinion with a view to the prevention of war. It carried on relief work during World War II through the American Friends Service Committee.

Scattergood Hostel and Scattergood Friends School photographs

Overview Scattergood Friends School opened in Iowa in 1890. The school closed during the Great Depression, and was repurposed during World War II as Scattergood Hostel to acclimate refugees from Europe. In 1944, it reopened as a school and remains open today. The bulk of this collection is photographs of Scattergood Refugee Hostel, but there are also photographs of pre-war and post-war Scattergood Friends School.

Overview Norman Jehiel Whitney (1891-1967) was a Quaker teacher, writer and devoted peace worker. From 1919-1957 he helped establish, and directed for many years, the Syracuse Peace Council. He left Syracuse in 1957 to work for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in peace education.
