Abstract The collection contains correspondence received by members of the Ely family, Quakers of Bucks County, Pa. The bulk of the correspondence concerns estate matters received by Hugh B. Ely as an executor of the estate of Elias Ely. The second group is largely family correspondence received by Mary Anna Ely who married Moses Eastburn. Overview Joshua Evans, a Quaker minister and abolitionist, was born in 1731 in West Jersey. About the year 1754, he experienced a religious conversion and thereafter devoted his life to sharing his rigorous interpretation of the gospel through an ascetic and pious life style and simple ministry. Barely educated, he was nevertheless acknowledged as a minister by Haddonfield Monthly Meeting in 1759. Friends' Opportunity in the Orient

Overview Abby Hopper Gibbons (1801-1893), daughter of Isaac T. Hopper (1771-1852), was an important figure in many of the reform movements of the mid- and late nineteenth centuries, especially abolition and her work with the Women's Prison Association and Isaac T. King family correspondence

Abstract The collection contains correspondence received by members of the King family, Quaker residents of Ceres, McKean County, Pennsylvania. The letters primarily deal with family concerns. One from Mary (King) Swayne, written in 1817, mentions that her husband, Joel Swayne, had contemplated returning to Indian territory but her poor health prevented his leaving. Anna King mentions her students and is distressed by the tensions in the Society of Friends in 1828.
