Joel and Hannah Bean Papers

Overview Joel Bean (1835-1914) and his wife, Hannah Elliott Bean (1830-1909), were prominent Quaker ministers in Iowa Yearly Meeting in the mid-nineteenth century when Quaker settlements were expanding in Iowa. Joel Bean was born in Alton, New Hampshire, in 1825, the son of John and Elizabeth Hill Bean, and educated at Friends Boarding School in Providence, Rhode Island. Overview Contains the papers of the Foster Family, a Wilburite New England Quaker family of Rhode Island, and the Meyers Family, conservative Orthodox Quakers of the Midwest. William Hobson Papers

Overview William Hobson, 1820-1891, was a Quaker minister and farmer from North Carolina, Iowa, and Oregon. The collection contains chiefly diaries (1859-1891) describing rural life in Iowa and ministerial visits to California, Kansas, Missouri, and Oregon; together with autobiographical fragments and notes for sermons.

Kaltenbach Family Correspondence

Overview The collection consists primarily of letters written by John E. Kaltenbach to his parents, Edward C. and Ethel Kaltenbach, from Wesleyan University, Yale Divinity School, and while working as the acting director for the Scattergood Hostel for European Refugees in Iowa. Also a small number of letters from his sister, Linda Kaltenbach, while a student at Swarthmore College.

Walter L. Moore correspondence

Abstract This collection includes letters received by Walter L. Moore in the year 1922-23, primarily regarding his visit to Iowa Yearly Meeting. Included are letters from Howard T. Jones, Benjamin S. Decou, Carl Patterson, Joseph S. Heald, Walter J. Brown, and Samuel Smedley. Also included are a request for contributions to the Scattergood seminary and a page of notes made by Walter L. Moore regarding his trip to Paullina, Iowa, including the number of members.

Scattergood Hostel and Scattergood Friends School photographs

Overview Scattergood Friends School opened in Iowa in 1890. The school closed during the Great Depression, and was repurposed during World War II as Scattergood Hostel to acclimate refugees from Europe. In 1944, it reopened as a school and remains open today. The bulk of this collection is photographs of Scattergood Refugee Hostel, but there are also photographs of pre-war and post-war Scattergood Friends School.

Smith family correspondence

Abstract The collection contains family correspondence, most received by Ebenezer R. Smith, a Quaker of New York State and Iowa. Of interest is an unsent letter to Orson Squire Fowler, phrenologist and radical author, in which Ebenezer Smith expresses interest in taking Fowler's courses in order to pursue a career as lecturer and phrenologist. Letters from his parents, Barak and Mary Smith, of Springdale, Iowa, and other relations mention farm life and family concerns.
