Overview Joel Bean (1835-1914) and his wife, Hannah Elliott Bean (1830-1909), were prominent Quaker ministers in Iowa Yearly Meeting in the mid-nineteenth century when Quaker settlements were expanding in Iowa. Joel Bean was born in Alton, New Hampshire, in 1825, the son of John and Elizabeth Hill Bean, and educated at Friends Boarding School in Providence, Rhode Island. Overview This collection contains the papers of Philadelphia Quaker Owen Biddle (1737-1799), his son, Clement Biddle (1778-1856), and numerous descendants. Owen Biddle, a scientist and merchant, was a member of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting and helped in the establishment of Westtown School (1799). George D. Cock Family Papers

Abstract This small collection includes George D. Cock's journal in two bound volumes of his trip in 1843 from his home in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, through Quaker communities in the East, including Philadelphia and Baltimore. The journal includes comments on his courtship of Susan W. Smith, who he married in 1845. The collection also includes a balance sheet from 1843 on freight carried, his marriage certificate, and a letter from his daughter, Marion Cock, which includes family information.
