Eli F. Brown Collection

Overview The collection contains manuscript memoirs of Eli F. Brown (1842-1908) in which he describes the hardships of Quakers caught in Loudoun County, Virginia, during the Civil War and immediately thereafter. He was briefly imprisoned for refusing miliary service and describes the looting and guerilla warfare, and the burning of Loudoun County in late 1864 on Sheridan's orders. Collection of Buckingham Monthly Meeting papers (copies)

Abstract This collection consists of copies of papers relating to Buckingham Monthly Meeting, handed down through the Watson family. Included are accounts of the meeting by John Watson (1740-1817) and by Samuel Preston written to John Watson (1774-1864). Also included are memorials of prominent members of Buckingham Monthly Meeting, the most extensive of which refer to Jacob Holcombe, John Scarbrough, Oliver Paxson, and Phebe Ely.

Burlington First-Day School Union

Overview The Burlington First-Day School Union was a Hicksite Quaker organization established in 1888. It included representatives from nine First-Day schools in Burlington and Mercer Counties, New Jersey, who met quarterly. Included are minutes of the Union, 1894-1902, and reports from First-day schools at Trenton, Upper Springfield, Mount Holly, Crosswicks, Mansfield, Mount, East Branch, Rancocas, and Vincentown.

George H. Burr Collected Papers on the Quaker Separation

Overview The Burr Collection includes manuscripts which document the Hicksite position during the Separation of 1827/28 in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and the trial over the Crosswicks School Fund. It is directly related to the Southard Papers/RG5/312, which contain a more complete description of the controversy. It also includes Burr's manuscript on the History of the Society of Friends which he compiled for Southard as background in preparing his case representing the Hicksite position.

Burton Alva Konkle Manuscripts

Overview The collection contains unpublished writings by Burton Alva Konkle, author and historian. The bulk of the material concerns James Wilson, signer of the Declaration of Independence and one of the six original justices appointed by George Washington to the Supreme Court of the United States. Also included is a manuscript on David Lloyd, William Penn's personal lawyer, Attorney General of Pennsylvania, and Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
