Elihu Burritt was born on December 10, 1810, in New Britain, Connecticut, into a working class family. He attended school briefly, but was largely self-educated. Burritt became a blacksmith to support himself, but he continued to study languages at night. Word of his erudition spread; he became known as the "Learned Blacksmith", and was offered opportunities to speak in public. [Anna] Ruth Fry was an activist and a writer born into a prominent Quaker family in England. From 1914-1924, she served as general secretary of the Friends Relief Commission, which provided help for refugees and others ravaged by World War I. Fry wrote about her experiences in A Quaker Adventure (1926). She was also the first chairman of the Russian Famine Relief Fund in 1921. The Union of Democratic Control was founded in 1914 in London, England by an alliance of radical Liberal Party and Independent Labour Party members to protest Britain's decision to enter World War I. It became a well-respected and internationally known research organization, publishing many pamphlets about British national and colonial affairs. It was disbanded in 1966.
