Overview The Lewis Benson Papers document the life and service of Lewis V. Benson (1906-1986), a Quaker and recorded minister of New York Yearly Meeting. Overview The Bettle family were prominent 19th century Quaker merchants in Philadelphia. Samuel Bettle, Sr., was Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting at the time of the Separation in 1827. His son, Samuel Bettle, Jr., was also a Quaker minister. They had at least five children, among whom was Samuel, Jr.; the latter married Mary Ann Jones in 1831. Scope and Content note This collection is comprised of the single volume manuscript of Charlotte Brate's play, "Massacre." The play describes a fictional event in the life of William Penn. It takes place in Germantown, Pa. in 1683 and describes the white settlers' fear of an Indian massacre and misunderstandings between the settlers and the Indians.
