Hill family commonplace book

Scope and Content note This collection is composed of the single volume commonplace book of an unidentified author by the last name of Hill. The volume includes extracts of "Extraordinary Escape," and a copied letter from the Bishop of London to George the Third at his accession to the Throne. It also includes extracts on various topics, including: hypochondriacs, dependents, despair, death, spring, learning, poets, fiction, friends, pride, ambition, religion, retirement, adversity, affectation, and war.

Ralph Hodgson and Aurelia Bolliger Hodgson papers

Overview Very little is known about the early life of Ralph Hodgson (1871-1962), a British poet. In the 1890s, he worked as a newspaper and magazine illustrator, signing some of his works 'Yorick', and, in 1913, founded "The Sign of the Flying Fame" publishers along with Claud Lovat Fraser and Holbrook Jackson. Hodgson published a variety of poetry volumes prior to joining that army at the beginning of World War I. In 1923, he accepted a position as a lecturer in English at Sendai University in Japan....

William and Mary Howitt Papers

Overview William Howitt (1792-1879) and his wife, Mary Botham Howitt (1799-1888), were English Quaker writers of miscellaneous poetic and narrative materials for children and adults. The collection contains mainly personal correspondence. Some translations from Swedish are included. There are scattered references to their developing interest in spiritualism after the 1840s and manuscript copies of some of the poems and stories by both Howitts.

John Greenleaf Whittier Manuscript Collection

Overview John Greenleaf Whittier was a New England Quaker poet, journalist, and abolitionist. His poetry, inspired by his religious and moral beliefs, was well regarded during his lifetime, and he was respected by both Orthodox and Hicksite Quakers. The collection contains Whittier correspondence, manuscript poetry, books, photographs and miscellaneous material.
