Biographical / Historical

Anna Pettit Broomell was a Philadelphia Quaker poet and writer of children’s books. She was born Anna Frances Thompson Pettit on December 3, 1887, and graduated from Swarthmore College in 1907. She earned a M.A. from Columbia University and married George Lupton Broomell, Swarthmore Class of 1906. The Broomells had two children, G. Lupton, Jr., and Hannah, both of whom also graduated from Swarthmore College.

Anna Pettit Broomell was a member of Green Street Monthly Meeting and active in the Society of Friends. She was chairman of the Publications Committee at Pendle Hill, the Quaker study center, and Philadelphia Yearly Meeting First Day School Committee (Race Street). She died October 4, 1972.

Anna Pettit Broomell was the daughter of Franklin (1841-1912) and Hannah Thompson Pettit. The family transferred from Salem Monthly Meeting to Green Street Monthly Meeting. The Pettit family had been members of the Society of Friends beginning with Jonathan Pettit who became a Quaker in 1750 and married Mary Shrouds. Their son, Joseph Pettit (1752-801), married Sarah Bassett. Their grandson, David Pettit (1808-1876), married Martha Engle. He was a progressive farmer and corresponded with Charles Downing. He was also an Elder at Salem Monthly Meeting and visited the Great Nemaha Indian Agency in 1873. David and Martha Pettit had six children: Mary, Woodnutt, William H., Franklin (1841-1912), Hannah (b. 1843 and married Harrison Streeter), and David (born 1849). David Pettit married out of unity to Clara Kern. They lived in Philadelphia and, later, Beverly, N.J.. He was in the iron business and a writer and poet.

The collection also contains correspondence from a branch of the Pettits descended from William Pettit and Mary Phipps who moved to Columbiana County, Ohio, about 1804. Their fourth child, Dr. William Pettit (1806-1853), married Jane R. Hussey, and another son, Joseph Pettit (1809- ) married Jane’s sister. Hannah G. Hussey (1810-1869) in 1832. Another sister, Hester G. Hussey (1814-1893) married Mathew Terrell. Mary Elma Pettit (b. 1843) was the fourth child of Joseph and Hannah Pettits, and she married Oscar Griffith in 1865.
