Scope and Contents

This collection includes Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania correspondence, deeds, household account books, copybooks and commonplace books, and miscellaneous newspaper clippings. There is also a photograph of the Clothier family visiting Egypt.

Organization: Organized into five series. Series 1. Correspondence; Series 2. Journals, Albums, and Commonplace Books; Series 3. Other Writings; Series 4. Property and Financial Records; Series 5. Miscellaneous.

Biographical / Historical

The Taylors and Thomsons who married into the Knight, Clothier, and Shoemaker families of Montgomery County, Pa., and its environs.

Herbert Knight Taylor (1879-1957) married Elizabeth E. Thomson (1875-1966) in 1897. Their youngest son, Herbert Knight Taylor (b. 1907) married Edith Clothier Maxwell who was the daughter of John Rogers Maxwell, Jr., and Lydia B. Clothier. Lydia was the daughter of Isaac H. and Mary Clapp Jackson Clothier; Isaac was a long supporter of Swarthmore College, including serving as Chairman of the Board of Managers and President of the Corporation.

Overview

The Taylors and Thomsons were Quakers from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, who married into the Knight, Clothier, and Shoemaker families. This collection includes correspondence, copybooks and albums, account books, family photographs, and miscellaneous clippings. Of particular interest is a large collection of deeds and some late 19th and early 20th century travel diaries.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Deposit. The collection was given by Robert M. Taylor, a descendent of the Clothier and Taylor families, in 2001 and 2003.
