This collection is comprised of the single handwritten volume diary of Samuel Gummere's 1854 trip to England. Early entries describe the ten day voyage by steamship, including descriptions of passengers, accommodations on board, and sea sickness. Later entries describe Gummere's exploration of England, including visits to Liverpool and London.

Biographical Note

Samuel James Gummere was born April 28, 1811, in Rancocas, New Jersey, the son of John and Elizabeth (Busby) Gummere. Gummere was a teacher who taught Latin, Greek, and mathematics at the Friends School in Providence, Rhode Island. He was an assistant teacher at Haverford College beginning in 1834, and became president of Haverford in 1862.

Gummere married twice. He married his first wife, Abigail Griscom, in 1835, and his second wife, Elizabeth Hooten Barton, in 1845. He had a son, Francis Barton, born March 6, 1855, with his second wife, Elizabeth.
