Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of four handwritten volumes of the journals of John Shoemaker, as well as correspondence between Charles Baker and George Vaux concerning the collection, dated 1893. Shoemaker's journals detail his religious visits throughout North America. Entries generally describe travel between destinations, families that host Shoemaker and his companions throughout their travels, and descriptions of Quaker meetings attended and Quaker families visited.

Biographical Note

John Shoemaker (1764-1817) was born July 11, 1764, in Abington, Pennsylvania, the son of John and Elizabeth (Livesey) Shoemaker. In 1788, Shoemaker married Jane Ashbridge, and the couple had three sons and one daughter. Shoemaker was elected to the state legislature in 1789, and was recognized a minister circa 1807. He also served on the Westtown School Committee from before the site was acquired up through its first two years (1794-1800). John Shoemaker died March 15, 1817, in Abington, Pennsylvania.
