Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of the single photocopy of a typed transcript of the journal of Joseph Elkinton. The journal entries describe his 1816 trip from Philadelphia to a Quaker missionary settlement and school called "Tunessassa," among the Seneca in upstate New York. His entries describe the preparation for the trip and his travel from Philadelphia to Tunessassa. The location of the original journal is unknown. This item is foldered.

Biographical Note

Joseph Pimm Elkinton (1794-1850) was born August 16, 1794, in Woolwich, New Jersey, the son of George and Beulah Elkinton. He married Sarah Sargent in 1811, at age 17, and the couple had six children together: James (1812-?), William Winn (1824-1880), Elizabeth (1827-?), John (1833-1864), and Joseph (1835-1898). Though born in Philadelphia, Elkinton lived in Ohio from 1820 to the early 1830's, and was living in Illinois as of 1835. He died in Greene, Illinois, in 1850.
