Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of the single volume manuscript of Barron H. Lerner's undergraduate thesis, entitled "The University of Pennsylvania in China: Medical Missionary Work, 1905-1914." The manuscript was submitted to the Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania, and includes chapters on: the student volunteer movement, the motivations of the Christian Association volunteers, the historical evolution of the university medical school (1905-1913), the missionaries entrance into Chinese society: hospital and religious work, the demise of the university medical school, and the legacy of the Christian association's work.

Biographical Note

Baron H. Lerner (1960-) was born on September 27, 1960, in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of infectious disease doctor Phillip I. Lerner and teacher Ronnie Hober Lerner, and was raised in Cleveland, Ohio. Lerner graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982, and from Columbia University's medical school in 1986. Lerner earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of Washington in 1996. Lerner is currently a member of the faculty at New York University Langone School of Medicine, where he teaches medical ethics and the history of medicine, and has published a number of books on medical issues and medical history.
