Student handbooks and guides

 Collection
Identifier: HCQ-001-005

Scope and Contents

The collection contains handbooks and other guides created for Haverford students by student governance bodies and College offices between 1902 and 2011.

The student handbooks dating from the 1902-1903 academic year to the 1928-1929 academic year were "presented by the Young Men's Christian Association of Haverford College." These booklets include calendars, information on the YMCA, and information about College customs, programs, and prizes. Several of the early handbooks were called "year-books." The 1929-1930 student handbook was presented by the Haverford College Christian Union.

From the 1930-1931 academic year to the 1966-1967 academic year, handbooks were presented to freshmen by the Student's Association of Haverford College. By the 1968-1969 academic year, the handbooks were known as student guides and were distributed by the Office of the Dean.

The collection also includes a student guide to Bryn Mawr and Haverford College created by students of both institutions for the 1972-1973 academic year and an International Students' Handbook created by the Office of International Student Services.

Biographical / Historical

The handbooks and guides in this collection were created by several entities, including the Students' Association, the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) of Haverford College, and the Office of the Dean of the College.

The Students' Association is made up of all students enrolled at Haverford College. The College has delegated to the Students' Association--and the Association has accepted--the responsibility for nearly all aspects of student conduct and of student organizations on the campus. The Students' Association in turn delegates authority to the Students' Council and to the Honor Council to carry out its executive, legislative, and judicial functions.

The Young Men's Christian Association of Haverford College was organized by Haverford students in 1879 with about 20 members. The organization held weekly meetings for students and faculty, and did charitable work in the surrounding neighborhood and Philadelphia.

The Office of the Dean of the College coordinates many academic support and student services at Haverford and is generally responsible for student life on campus.
