Ramón García Castro correspondence
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of correspondence between Haverford College Professor Emeritus of Spanish Ramón García Castro and literary figures of the Spanish-speaking world dating from 1973 to 1982. It contains materials related to Luis Rafael Sánchez, John Hassett, Nicanor Parra, Gonzalo Rojas, Manuel Puig, Reinaldo Arenas, and Guillermo Cabrera Infante. Most of the letters pertain to writers' visits to Haverford for speaking engagements. In a 1977 letter, Puig asks if one of García Castro's students can pick up a package of books and papers while he is in Buenos Aires.

Biographical / Historical
Ramón García Castro was Professor of Spanish at Haverford College and later Professor Emeritus. Haverford's Spanish Department was created in 1972, at which time Manuel García-Barrio and Ramón García-Castro were hired as faculty members. García-Castro specialized in Latin American literature. During his tenure at Haverford, García-Castro invited various luminaries in the field of Latin American literature to speak on campus, including Puerto Rican author Luis Rafael Sánchez, Chilean poets Nicanor Parra and Gonzalo Rojas, Argentine author Manuel Puig, and Cuban writers Reinaldo Arenas and Guillermo Cabrera Infante. Correspondence related to these writers is included in this collection. García Castro died on May 2, 2020.
