Scope and Contents

The bulk of material consist of the compiled minutes and reports of Pacific Yearly Meeting's summer Annual Session and spring Representative Committee meeting, produced for distribution to constituent meetings. The collection also includes an early minute book and member list for the College Park Association of Friends, and some material from the Orange Grove Monthly Meeting's 1956 outreach regarding school integration.

Biographical / Historical

Pacific Yearly Meeting grew out of the Pacific Coast Association of Friends, begun in 1931, and the College Park Association, founded in San Jose in 1889 by Joel and Hannah Bean after a schism in Iowa Yearly Meeting. The first Yearly Meeting was held in 1947. Pacific Yearly Meeting affiliated with Friends General Conference in 2019 and includes several dozen monthly meetings and worship groups, primarily in California.

Overview

Pacific Yearly Meeting is made up of members of the Religious Society of Friends in California. The Yearly Meeting has deposited its archives and many local-meeting records in the Whittier College Library, but copies of some records are also deposited in Friends Historical Library.

This collection is stored at the Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College.

Related Materials

Meetings at Berkeley, Sacramento, and Riverside in California were nurtured by the American Friends Fellowsip Council between the time the latter was set off from the Fellowhip Committee of the AFSC in 1933 and when it merged into the FWCC American Section in 1954. Information on these meetings during this period may be found in AFFC records (RG4/004) and in the correspondence of the FWCC (RG1/001) which have been deposited at Friends Historical Library.

Significant material related to Joel and Hannah Bean and other members of their family and the College Park Association of Friends are held by Quaker collections at Friends Historical Library and Haverford College.
