Biographical / Historical

Darby Monthly Meeting was established in 1684 by Chester [Concord] Quarterly Meeting out of Chester Monthly Meeting. In 1827, after the Hicksite Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, the meeting split into Hicksite and Orthodox branches.

Darby Monthly Meeting (Orthodox) removed to Lansdowne in 1831. It was discontinued in 1849 and its members were transferred to Chester Monthly Meeting (Orthodox).

Darby Monthly Meeting (Hicksite), which reunited with Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) in 1955, was the forerunner of the current Darby Monthly Meeting of Friends.

Processing Information

A series of acidic scrapbooks with miscellaneous meeting records, 1682-1919, were disassembled and the contents stored by genre type in acid-free folders. These scrapbooks were filmed, probably in the 1940s, and can be viewed on Reel MR-Ph 150 in Friends Historical Library. Loose records, deposited by the meeting, have been added to these folders and the same are described in the inventory below.
