Abstract

Collection contains extensive correspondence between the Gormans and VEPCO, the Virginia Electric and Power Company; also includes information about the organizations Penny Resistance and People Abolish the Death Penalty, and about Jerome Gorman's interest in attempts to extradite Jens Söring to Europe and his work to improve conditions for Death Row prisoners in Virginia.

Biographical / Historical

Jerome D. Gorman; Donna B. Gorman; lived in Richmond, Virginia; Jerome Gorman was a physician specializing in emergency medicine; both were activists against the death penalty; they withheld one penny from each of their electric bills, as an expression of opposition to the electrocution of prisoners in Virginia; they also withheld two pennies from their telephone bill. To support their work they formed an organization called Penny Resistance. The Gormans were active in other anti-death penalty groups, including People Abolishing the Death Penalty. Jerome Gorman also worked on the case of the extradition of Jens Söring (Soering), a condemned prisoner in Virginia.
