Biographical / Historical

The Moores and Tysons were Maryland Quaker families. Robert Rowland Moore (1863-1934) was married in 1886 to Margaret Gittings Tyson (1859-1937). She was descended from Elisha Tyson, prominent Quaker abolitionist, and George Ellicott of Ellicott City, Maryland. Robert Rowland Moore was descended from William Wilson Moore (1786-1855) who married Tabitha Brook Rowland (1790-1817) in 1808 at Motherkill Monthly Meeting, Md., and also from Joseph Townsend (1756-1841), who wrote an account of the Battle of Brandywine and subsequently moved to Baltimore.

Processing Information

Pictures that were part of accession 98-015, given by Esther Leeds Cooperman, were removed from RG5/206 and assigned PA 118, Moore-Tyson Picture Collection. A list of contents was created, but the items were not foldered. In April 2006, the same donor gave a second group of papers and photographs. These were described as Esther Leeds Cooperman Family Pictures and assigned PA 145, a number that was assigned to a second collection.

In 2010, the two groups were consolidated into a single collection, assigned PA 153, Moore-Tyson Family Pictures. Esther Leeds Cooperman gave the first series containing three folders in 1998; the second series contains the 2006 accession.
