The largest portion of this collection is three volumes of George Truman's correspondence, primarily between George Truman and his wife, along with other family members such as their children, and other Friends or acquaintances. There are also some photographs (mostly reproductions), family memorabilia, and other miscellaneous items such as lesson books).

The Truman and Underhill families were prominent Philadelphia-area Quaker families with close ties to Swarthmore College and active in social concerns. The best known from these families is George Truman (1798-1877). He was a Quaker merchant and doctor and a recognized minister who visited Indians in the American West and former Quaker settlements in the West Indies. He was one of the founders of Swarthmore College.

Arrangement
Correspondence is organized chronologically and mounted in three volumes. There are two additional volumes of mounted photographs (mostly reproductions) and memorabilia. Some loose volumes are contained in one custom box.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Gift of Benjamin Mott Underhill (George Truman's grandson) and his children, James Truman Underhill and Sarah Gilpin Underhill, 1940.
