Biographical / Historical

Eleanor Brooks Webb was born in Jackson County, Ohio, and grew up in Rio Grande, a small town in southeast Ohio; her father was a missionary in the American Sunday-School Union. She attended Rio Grande College and earned a Bachelor's degree from Otterbein College in 194i, joining the American Friends Service Committee Peace Caravan for a summer. She then worked for the Ohio Baptist Convention doing Publicity and office work and three months for the Christian Friendliness Department of the Woman's American Baptist Home Mission Society. She attended Yale Divinity School in 1944-45 to prepare for work in Christian journalism.

Eleanor married George N. Webb in 1946. After their marriage, the couple moved to Toledo, Ohio, while George studied electrical engineering. Son Randall Webb was born in 1948 and daughter Alison in 1952 in North Carolina. When George accepted a position at Johns Hopkins the family settled in northeast Baltimore.
