Abstract The collection contains correspondence received by Philadelphia Quaker merchant John Ladd Howell and his family. The majority of the letters were sent by his father, John Howell, addresseed to him and to his mother during extended absences in North and South Carolina and Georgia. The letters concern family business with fatherly advice to his son, some local commentary, and mention of mistreatment of the Indians. Of interest is a letter from Richard Waln from the Barbadoes.
