Abstract

Carl Barus was a professor of engineering and social activist. He taught in the Engineering Department at Swarthmore College from 1952 to 1985. He was active in negotiating a resolution to the 1969 admissions office sit-in by SASS and subsequently served on the Black Concerns Committee. Contains papers on African American student concerns at Swarthmore from the SASS sit-in in 1969 to minutes and papers of the Black Concerns Committee in the 1980s.

Abstract

Leandre Jackson, a professional photographer, graduated from Swarthmore College in 1975 and served as Director of Swarthmore's Black Cultural Center 1975-1977 (full time from 1975-1976 and part time from 1976-1977. This collection consist of photographs taken by Leandre Jackson and displayed in a February 2015 exhibition at the Swarthmore College Library entitled "Proof of Black Life."

Abstract Contains the records of the Black Cultural Center, founded in 1969 and located on the campus of Swarthmore College. The BCC serves as a home for a number of organizations on campus including SASS (Swarthmore African-American Student Society), Gospel Choir, and Mjumbe, a literary magazine representing black students.
