Clarence Pickett journals

Abstract

This collection consists of typescript copies of the journals of Clarence Pickett (1884-1965), prominent Friend and Executive Secretary of the American Friends Service Committee for 23 years. These journals form a record of Pickett's daily activities promoting peace worldwide between 1933 and 1965.

Scope and Contents

These two albums consist of small portraits of people involved with AFSC during WWII. The portraits are black and white, and are accompanied by names. Some of the photographs are missing.

Thomas C. Potts correspondence

James Morgan Read Papers

Abstract James Morgan Read (1908-1985) was a Quaker and president of Wilmington College from 1960-69. He also served as the United Nations Deputy High Commissioner from 1951-60, and was a vice president of the Charles F. Kettering Foundation from 1969 until his retirement in 1974. This collection includes letters written by J. Edgar Rhoads to his family while he was in Germany administering war relief after WWI. Also included are the diaries of his grandfather, Jonathan E. Rhoads, from 1908-1910. These provide a record of daily appointments and expenses.

The papers of John F. Rich, who worked at the AFSC as a director of public relations and later founded his own public relations firm. The collection includes letters and diaries from his travels in Spain, India, and China during his years with the A.F.S.C. as well as materials from his firm.

David S. and Mary W. Richie Papers

Abstract

David S. Richie (1908-2005) spent his life devoted to public service, particularly in the areas of work camps and cooperatives. A birthright Quaker, he served as Secretary of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Social Order Committee from 1939–1973 and was president of the Board of Friends Housing, Inc. He also was involved with the American Friends Service Committee and other organizations. These papers are divided into correspondence, writings, and topical files as assembled by Richie.

Rockland County Peace Association Records

The Rockland County Peace Association was a small local peace group begun in 1930 to stimulate popular education and public opinion with a view to the prevention of war. It carried on relief work during World War II through the American Friends Service Committee.
