Ross Flanagan Papers

Abstract

Ross Flanagan (1934- ), is Quaker pacifist and activist, has been involved in many Quaker-sponsored projects, peace, and civil rights activities. In the 1950s he served on the staff of the American Friends Service Committee. He was an early protestor against the Vietnam war and worked with A Quaker Action Group in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1970s Flanagan was involved in neighborhood revitalization projects in West Philadelphia.

Elizabeth A.W. (Betty) Furnas was an active member of the Society of Friends who served as a member of the Board of Pendle Hill and was a member of the Women's Problems Group of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and its sucessor, Philadelphia Quaker Women. The collection includes minutes and correspondence, particularly of the latter, as well as published and unpublished writings and other material.

Theodore Hetzel (1906-1990) was a Quaker professor of engineering at Haverford College in Haverford, Pennsylvania, whose interests led him to involvement with Native American and Quaker issues. An avid photographer, the materials in this collection are primarily photographic, as well as correspondence and documents.

Scope and Content note This collection is comprised of a single volume manuscript notebook, with notes related to a disturbance at the Mulberry Street House, when George and Ann Jones held an evening meeting, in 1826. According to the first entry, at a meeting of the Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia, a committee was created for “ascertaining the facts, and enquiring into the cause of the disturbance which occurred in the vicinity of our meeting house a few weeks since.” The notebook records the meetings...
