Overview

Correspondence, 1941-1945, between Allen Grover (ca. 1903-ca. 1996) and Earl M. Freligh (1917-2005), the former on the staff of Time Magazine, the latter an ambulance driver for the American Field Service in Italy and North Africa during World War II. A second section is the correspondence, 1940-1948, between Allen Grover and Josiah Marvel (1896-1959) relating particularly to his relief work in France in 1940.

Overview

The scrapbook of Josiah P. Marvel includes Nazi documents, such as certificates and letters, from Marvel's time in occupied France during the summer of 1940, while travelling to and from Paris in service to the American Friends Service Committee. Documents include permissions from Nazi commanders in France, as well as The Hague and Brussels. Also included is a map of the location of prison camps, clothing lists, and a printed booklet on the National Work for Infants.

Abstract The collection is organized into four folders: the group's general records, including the initial plan and charter; the records of the Civilian Readjustment Committee, the post-war arm of the group; information on a project in Brazil; and writings by people outside the group. Abstract Collection contains primarily Marvel's files on the wartime projects of the Quaker Emergency Service, 1942-1945, and its postwar Civilian Readjustment Committee, including typed minutes, 1947-1961.
